New Blog Name and Address: Sign and Shadow
Well, I’m sad to say it, but given the feedback I’ve received probably no one else will be: unfinalizable.com is now signandshadow.com.
Apparently the word “unfinalizable,” in addition to being unpronounceable, was too esoteric. I intended the name to capture the “always relevant” character of God’s word–though it is indeed ancient and at times “hard to understand” (2 Pet. 3:16), it is nevertheless always “useful” (2 Tim 3:16). More than that, as Peter puts it, it is an “imperishable seed” that cannot fail to grow and flourish and increase in our lives “forever” (1 Peter 1:25).
However, clarity is more important. The new title comes from Hebrews and also captures the “always relevant” idea, while also referencing the work I did on typology for my dissertation, and most importantly adding to all of this the fact that the whole of Scripture points us to our great High Priest Jesus Christ. Here’s my translation of Hebrews 8:5, 6, which uses this language:
The levitical priests serve a sign and shadow of the heavenly things… But now Christ has attained a more excellent ministry, in as much as he is the minister of a better covenant–one which was established on better promises.
The Old Covenant is a sign and shadow of the new. It is an image of what will be. Similarly in the here and now, though we do not yet see perfectly what we will be in the age to come, though we do not yet know as we will know in heaven, “we do see Christ,” our champion, pioneer, archetype, savior, and Lord (Heb 2:5-11).
More to come, but for now note the name change!
