Like a Mother Hen
I recently preached on John 19:23-27 at Christ the King. That’s the passage where Jesus gives his mother into the care of the beloved disciple. It was a privilege to consider a “mother’s comfort” on Mother’s Day (especially as one who was blessed to receive such comfort growing up). Here it is, for those interested.
The title comes from Matthew 23:37, where Jesus describes himself as a mother hen, gathering and comforting and protecting her chicks. It’s an interesting passage, especially since it occurs in the context of Jesus condemning Jerusalem. Even in his anger, our God longs to comfort us, calling us to go to him as a child goes to his mother.
